On our way from Lubango to Virei, the region of the Ovakuvale, we passed through Namibe, as the former city of Moçâmedes is now known. Gaspard Madeira introduced us to the Mbali funeral art. Upon visiting one or two cemetaries, we realised that this artform was fast disappearing through neglect, pillage and erosion. We decided to document the cemetaries as completely as possible in video and in still photography, and to use the images to raise awareness of the urgent need to protect this aspect of the cultural heritage of Angola. Work in progress.
